It is hard to remember a time when Piers Morgan was aiming insults at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. However, the former Good Morning Britain journalist once had a platonic relationship with the pair, especially the Duchess of Sussex.

People may have forgotten that Piers once connected with Meghan on Twitter in 2015 after following several Suits actors, to which Meghan sent him a message saying she was a ‘big fan’ of his.

The initial interaction led to Piers sharing what he called a ‘brilliant’ article written by Meghan concerning her experiences with racism as a biracial woman and declaring himself a ‘super fan’ of the former actress on Twitter.

Although Meghan Markle no longer has a Twitter account meaning most of their interactions have been deleted, their platonic relationship continued over the next year when they met up for drinks…just a couple months before she was set up on a blind date with Prince Charming himself.

When Harry met Meghan...

In November 2016, Prince Harry released a statement confirming his new relationship with the American actress and called for ‘wave of abuse and harassment’ against her to end; something which Piers Morgan agreed with in one of his articles.

Morgan wrote: “I'm not surprised he's fallen for her, or that he's so ferociously protecting their relationship. Meghan's got beauty, brains, charm and a great sense of humour. She's also an ambitious, hard-working and talented actress with an impressive passion for things she believes in."

The journalist added for Prince Harry to ‘ignore all the poisonous rubbish’ he was reading about Markle…a statement which has indeed not aged well considering the Duke of Sussex’s current trial against Piers Morgan’s former Mirror News Group.

Fast forward a year from Prince Harry’s announcement re his new romance, Piers Morgan pens a column congratulating him again but makes a snide comment suggesting that his relationship with Meghan was no longer as solid as it was pre-Harry.

In terms of Piers’ relationship with Prince Harry up until this point is disputable, as although Piers Morgan has always been a ‘fierce defender of the Royal Family’, Prince Harry’s claims in London’s High Court in June 2023 imply that there was not a huge amount of trust from the royal’s side.

Following Harry and Meghan’s wedding, where Piers was notably not in attendance, the balance shifted against the pair and Piers began to write articles and make interviews labelling Meghan as a ‘social climber’ and ‘selfish…fame-obsessed piece of work’.

Perhaps the crux of their now sour relationship came in March 2021, after the couple had stepped down from their roles as senior working royals and had given the infamous Oprah Winfrey interview, when Piers accused Meghan of lying about her mental health.

Some 41,000 complaints were sent in regarding Piers’ comments meaning he walked away from Good Morning Britain and has since continued to berate the couple throwing names such as ‘mudslinger’, ‘traitor’ and a ‘surly spoiled brat’ respectively.

The Privacy Tour chapter

Upon Meghan and Harry moving to Montecito and sharing their ‘side to the story’ in the form of a Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir Spare, Piers started to brand them as ‘hypocrites’ for voicing their desire for privacy through media productions.

In one instance, Piers was even seen throwing Harry’s book into a bin live on TalkTV on his show Piers Morgan Uncensored.

Some may say the privacy tour continues to this day as Harry names Piers Morgan several times in his witness statement against Mirror News Group in London’s High Court.

Notably, Harry mentioned that Piers made him feel ‘physically sick’ concerning how he allegedly obtained Princess Diana’s messages and also how he and Meghan have been ‘subjected to a barrage of horrific personal attacks and intimidation from Piers Morgan’ since they started dating.

In light of the recent case, Sky News reported that: “Piers Morgan is a massive, massive nemesis of Prince Harry, he’s been consistently and repeatedly tearing into Harry and Meghan.”

Piers countered the criticism by saying that he looks forward to reading about the comments in Prince Harry’s next book before tweeting, “another day, another shocking media invasion into my privacy.”

Back in court, Jane Kerr, the former royal editor of the Daily Mirror said that Piers Morgan was her editor at the time and stated that would ‘occasionally direct or inject information into a story’.

Harry’s testimony came to a close today but the trial against MGN continues.
