Who is Jane Kerr; the former journalist for the Daily Mirror set to take the witness box after Prince Harry?

It’s been an explosive start to the second day of Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his time in the witness box at London’s high court, as the trial between 100 high-profile names against the Mirror Group Newspapers continues. Once again breaking from the norm, Harry quipped the moment that Andrew Green KC commenced with proceedings - when the lawyer opened with “Prince Harry, we are now on the 22nd article,” the Duke interrupted with "Good morning, Mr Green."

While the focus is on Harry once again, his time in the witness box is set to come to an end after David Sherborne completes his line of questioning with the Duke of Sussex. Later today, it will be Jane Kerr’s moment to be questioned and cross examined by both Green and Sherborne. Kerr happened to be the Royal editor at the Daily Mirror between 2000 and 2005 - dates that articles regarding Harry make up part of the court case.

Her byline happens to be on 10 of the 33 articles in question during the high court case, and already has elicited controversy with the Royal family, having been reportedly banned from attending Buckingham Palace in 2003 in what was deemed by The Guardian as a retaliation regarding fake news stories regarding footmen at the Palace in November the same year.

Before ascending into the editorial role, Kerr was a royal correspondent for the paper from 1997, covering the death of Princess Diana, before returning to her correspondent role following the death of the Queen Mother in 2005. She left the Daily Mirror in 2010 and has since become a director for Stockholm-based communication consultancy business, Kreab.

Though we are having to wait for her appearance in the witness box for any further comments from the former Royal correspondent, she did complete a witness statement that was shown to Harry, leading him to respond “it would appear from her comments that in most cases she can neither recall the story nor its source.”

Perhaps she might fare better with her recollection when under examination from David Sherborne, known at times to be incredibly gruelling with his cross examinations, as Rebekah Vardy will attest to.
