As Kim Kardashian buys necklace worn by Princess Diana, is she inspired by icons from the past such as Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson?

If you are battling against Kim Kardashian in a bid, I think it’s pretty fair to say that most people would bet on Kim to win! This was exactly the case when it came to a recent Sotheby’s sale when she outbid others to achieve the grand prize of The Attallah Cross, a piece of jewellery that was worn by Princess Diana.

The Attallah Cross is a pendant that comprises of square-cut amethysts and circular diamonds. According to Vogue, the piece of jewellery, “was first created back in the 1920s by Garrard, one of Princess Diana’s most worn jewellers. The pendant was bought in the 1980s by Naim Attallah, a friend of Princess Diana’s, who loaned it to the royal for several appearances."

This is not the first time Kim Kardashian has purchased historical memorabilia in an auction. In 2019, her daughter North received a unique and beyond memorable Christmas present, when Kim presented her with not only the white fedora hat that Michael Jackson wore in his ‘Smooth Criminal’ video, but also a jacket that he had also worn.

Kim revealed on her Instagram Story that the Michael Jackson hat still had remnants of the makeup that Michael Jackson had worn (probably making it even more valuable!).

Although Kim Kardashian did not buy the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress she wore to the 2022 Met Gala, she was still allowed to wear it for the evening thanks to the museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Kim reportedly had to go on an extreme diet and work out regime in order to fit into it on the night.

There was also further controversy after the night when reports surfaced that the dress had been damaged but these were refuted.

Kim Kardashian has been described as a ‘modern day Marilyn Monroe,’ so it is not surprising she decided to wear the iconic 1962 dress Marilyn wore to wish President John F. Kennedy Happy Birthday, to the Met Gala. “The instant she stepped foot on the red carpet wearing the infamous glittering dress, her hair platinum blonde and perfectly coiffed, the reference was unmistakable.” Vogue magazine said in May 2022.

Kim Kardashian may not necessarily be inspired by the likes of Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson. She may, in the case of Marilyn Monroe, see it as a way of playing up to the label of being the ‘modern day Marilyn.’ Kim could also be simply a savvy businesswoman (which she clearly is) and is slowly amassing a collection of historical memorabilia.
