A birthday present of a song may sound appealing, but not when it comes from Miley Cyrus.

The singer-songwriter has used her latest album 'Endless Summer Vacation', which is released in March 2023, to make lyrics about the relationship she had with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

In her song 'Flowers', which was released on Liam's 33rd birthday, Friday 13 January 2023, she sings, 'I can love me better than you can', a line which is repeated several times.

Their love was a tumultuous ten year on and off again relationship, culminating in a marriage and soon after a divorce. The former couple originally fell in love in 2009 on the set of Julie Anne Robinson's dismally-reviewed romantic drama The Last Song.

Miley got engaged to Liam in May 2012, but they split in September 2013, before reuniting in 2016. The couple married in December 2018, and their divorce was finalised in January 2020.

Some of Miley's fans believed she was intentionally picking January 13 as her release date as some sort of 'revenge' on Liam, with one calling it 'messy as hell.'

Liam, who's taking over Henry Cavill's part in The Witcher, is now dating fellow Australian Gabriella Brooks and has been since 2019.

In March 2022, Miley branded her divorce to Liam 'a f****** disaster' when she helped a couple get engaged during her set at Lollapalooza Brazil.

The Midnight Sky hitmaker played the festival in São Paulo and brought a gay couple up on stage for the proposal.

After congratulating the pair, she remarked: 'Honey, I hope your marriage goes better than mine, mine was a f******ing disaster.'

Miley had previously admitted she had 'too much conflict' in her marriage, claiming, 'There was too much conflict….When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don't get off on drama or fighting.'

Miley follows in the footsteps of singer Shakira who also used song lyrics to take a pop at her ex partner Gerard Piqué. Writing has always been known to be a therapy and music is a perfect platform for expressing raw heartache.

Miley may say 'new year, new Miley' on social media but she appears to be still coming to terms with losing a man who played a huge role in her life. Fans will certainly support her as she makes this transition.
