He's still standing, but Elton John would like a rest. Elton is to say goodbye to touring when he headlines Glastonbury 2023.

The singing and songwriting legend will be the top act on the Pyramid stage and it will be a spectacular farewell for the global music icon.

"There is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans," he said in a statement announcing the show.

"I can't wait to embrace the spirit of the greatest festival in the world. It's going to be incredibly emotional."

The show will come more than five years after Sir Elton announced his 350-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. It was originally due to finish in 2021, to give the 75-year-old time with his husband and two children. Multiple dates had to be rescheduled, however, due to the Covid pandemic and the hip injury sustained by the singer in a fall.

John - who will take to Glastonbury's main stage on Sunday, June 25 - has always been a crowd-pleaser ensuring songs such as Your Song, Rocket Man, Honky Cat, Crocodile Rock, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I’m Still Standing, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart and many, many more are delivered to expectant crowds.

It’s a big part of why he sells out tour dates so reliably; people know they’ll get a concert they’ll love.

We expect Elton will deliver his usual classics to the Glastonbury crowd, but he has expressed a desire for a chance to play his less well-known songs at a future date.

The star has not completely ruled out the possibility of one-off concert dates in the future - telling the BBC in 2018 that his "dream thing" would be a theatrical residency where he could play lesser-known tracks like Amoreena and Original Sin instead of hits like I'm Still Standing and Candle In The Wind.

"I've sung these songs nearly 5,000 times, some of them, and although they're wonderful songs, and I'm very appreciative of them, I've sung them enough," he said.

Sir Elton is the first headliner to be announced for next year's Glastonbury festival - for which tickets have already sold out.

Other rumoured performers include Arctic Monkeys, Taylor Swift and Guns N' Roses.

After Glastonbury, Elton John only has seven dates left to play in Europe before he retires from touring.
