The year 2022 was a difficult one for many reasons, and singer-songwriter Shakira will have more reason than most to be glad to see the back of it. Her partner of 12 years, Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué, ended their relationship and has been dating a much younger woman, Clara Chia Marti.

Shakira and Gerard share two sons together and apparently they've finally resolved custody arrangements with Shakira moving the boys to Miami to be close to family and Gerard having access to see them for 10 days of the month, as well as holiday co-parenting.

The drama surrounding their split has been fuelled by a video emerging of Gerard taking a work video call from home in 2021 and there is a sighting of Clara in the background. This looks like there's potential to say things were becoming too close in 2021 between the footballer and his work colleague Clara, almost a year before Shakira and Gerard officially split.

Who is Clara, the woman at the heart of Gerard and Shakira's break-up?

Clara reportedly works for Gerard’s movie and TV production company, Kosmos, handling special events while still a student studying public relations, The Sun reported on August 10, 2022. Gerard is listed on the company’s webpage as founder, CEO and president, as well as chairman of the board of directors.

The soccer star is 35, while Clara is 12 years his junior at 23 years old. That would be quite a change from his romance with Shakira, as she was 10 years older than Gerard.

Clara has one younger sister and is from an affluent family. Her father is a civil lawyer and is a fan of FC Barcelona, the team which Gerard plays for. Her family owns an apartment in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in the city of Barcelona called Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.

Gerard showed how serious things had become when he took Clara as his date to a friend’s wedding in Costa Brava, Spain, on August 20 in 2022. The pair were photographed dressed up and holding hands. At one point, the football star put his arm around Clara as they walked together at the event.

They stepped out again for a date night in Barcelona on November 16. The athlete could be seen holding his girlfriend’s purse while she adjusted her shoe. They also had a new year's eve night out with many of Gerard's friends and colleagues.

While Gerard has moved on with Clara, the 'She Wolf' singer admitted she was having a more difficult time with their split.

"I can only say that I put everything I had into this relationship and my family," Shakira told Elle during an interview published on September 2, 2022, adding that 'everything is so raw and new' in the aftermath of their breakup.

"The big dream of having a family forever, to see that dream broken or shredded into pieces is probably one of the most painful things that you can ever go through," the 'Whenever, Wherever' singer explained.

"But I think that women, we are resilient. You know, we have this resiliency that is just innate in all of us."
