As well as bringing up former relationships before Meghan Markle such as Chelsy Davy in his statement, Prince Harry has also brought up the name of Major James Hewitt. According to Sky News, “In his statement, Harry also included details of newspaper reports based on a ‘rumour’ that his biological father was James Hewitt.”

In his statement, Prince Harry said the following: “Numerous newspapers had reported a rumour that my biological father was James Hewitt, a man my mother had a relationship with after I was born. At the time of this article and others similar to it, I wasn’t actually aware that my mother hadn't met Major Hewitt until after I was born.”

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the name of Major James Hewitt, he is an officer who was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, who became best known for having an affair with the late Princess Diana.

According to The Independent, “In 2009, Hewitt opened a high-end bar named The Polo House in Marbella, Spain, which had al fresco dining and served cocktails and light bites. It closed four years later in 2013. Hewitt is now reportedly working as a gardener, living in Devon, with his elderly mother. Hewitt does not have any children.”

Although Prince Harry discussed Major James Hewitt and the rumour about him being his ‘biological father’ in his statement, he also wrote about him in his memoir Spare.

“Tabloid readers were delighted by the idea that the younger child of Prince Charles wasn’t the child of Prince Charles,” he said. “They couldn’t get enough of this ‘joke’ for some reason. Maybe it made them feel better about their lives that a young price’s life was laughable.”

He also made a point in saying in Spare that “Never mind that my mother didn’t meet Major Hewitt until long after I was born, the story was simply too good to drop.”
