Nadine Dorries, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mid Bedfordshire, has announced her decision to step down from her position. In a recent tweet, Dorries conveyed her message to the chief whip, stating her immediate resignation as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire. This development will prompt a by-election in her constituency, as a new representative will be sought.

She expressed deep gratitude for the privilege of representing such a remarkable constituency. However, Dorries believes that the time has come for a fresh perspective and for someone younger to assume the responsibilities of representing Mid Bedfordshire - having served in parliament since 2005.

During her tenure, Dorries also held notable government positions. Since 2019, when Boris Johnson assumed office as Prime Minister, she has been an active member of the government. In September 2021, Dorries attained a promotion to the Cabinet, serving as the Culture Secretary. Her tenure in this role continued until Mr. Johnson's departure from Downing Street in September 2022.

With Dorries' resignation, that now leads to a forthcoming by-election for Mid-Bedfordshire and a chance for either the Labour Party of Liberal Democrats to further strengthen their position in the Houses of Parliament. The resignation also happens to have taken place the same week that Rishi Sunak is set to approve an honours list by then PM, Boris Johnson. Dorries was named as someone on the list thought to be rewarded with a peerage after her support for the former Prime Minister.
