Everybody’s favourite ‘Starboy’ has been revealed as statistically the most popular musician on the planet, according to Guinness World Records.

The Weeknd clinched two new world records earlier this week by racking up the most monthly listeners on Spotify, specifically 111.4 million, while he also ‘Earned’ the title of being the first artist to reach 100 million listeners a month on the music streaming service.

The ‘Blinding Lights’ crooner has previously been awarded two Guinness World Record plaques in 2016, when his album Beauty Behind the Madness, which generated the single Can’t Feel My Face, became the most streamed album on Spotify the previous year and spent the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot 100 as a solo male artist.

However, the latest figures come off the back of the 33-year-old Canadian’s fourth collaboration with Ariana Grande, namely the ‘Die For You (Remix)’, which not only went viral on TikTok but also peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

While the remix worked in The Weeknd’s favour (real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) in terms of statistical popularity, Ariana Grande has nearly 31 million fewer monthly listeners than her collaborator and is fourth overall in the Spotify rankings.

This begs the question - who else did The Weeknd beat in terms of being the most popular artist? PeopleWorld takes a look.

The Weeknd could be telling other artists to ‘Save Their Tears’ as the Oscar nominee finished streaks ahead of his fellow musicians in Spotify’s monthly listener rankings.

Miley Cyrus finished as runner-up with nearly 30 million fewer listeners than The Weeknd with her self-love anthem Flowers generating over 740 million plays since its release on January 12.

Other female singers filled up the remaining spots in the top six with Shakira coming in third with 81.6 million listeners, 80.2 million Swifties tuning into the ‘Midnights’ singer who is currently on tour, and Rihanna coming in sixth with 78.5 million, hot off the back of her Superbowl halftime performance.

The Weeknd’s closest male competitor is Ed Sheeran who generated 77.5 million monthly listeners, with the number expected to grow ahead of his new album ‘Subtract’ and documentary ‘The Sum of It All’.

Therefore, while everyone looks forward to the weekend after a hard working week, they obviously all love The Weeknd too.
