The GLAAD Media Awards are set to honour Christina Aguilera in their annual Los Angeles ceremony alongside Bad Bunny and Jeremy Pope.

The ‘Beautiful’ singer and actress will claim the Advocate for Change Award for her ‘decades-long ally ship’ in promoting acceptance and helping the LGBTQ+ community, throughout her career that spans from 1998.

GLAAD, which stands for ‘Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’, explained their decision for Christina to be named Advocate for Change, when they announced their honourees and 300 nominees.

The committee suggested that Christina had used her platform to advance conversations through music, raised half a billion dollars for HIV research and spoken out about Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ campaign.

More recently, Christina’s impact was noted when a Club Q Colorado Springs shooting survivor used her lyrics when appearing in testimony before the U.S House Oversight Committee on LGBTQ violence.

Michael Anderson referenced Christina’s 2002 song Beautiful by stating, ‘words can’t bring us down’ - a phrase which has since become a mantra for the whole community.

Not only have the lyrics made an impact but also Christina’s music video cemented the singer as an advocate for LGBTQ when it featured an unapologetic gay kiss.

While Christina is an honouree for GLAAD, she has previously won an Ally for Equality Award, in which she shared her love for the community in her speech: “Since the very beginning of my career, I have leaned on the LGBTQ+ community for support, friendship, joy and acceptance. I have found the most solace and unimaginable strength in my friends who identify as queer.”

Upon hearing the news that Christina will be honoured, fans took to Twitter to share their excitement and love for the ‘Your Body’ singer.

One fan said, ‘It’s about time, Christina’s a true ally, and she deserves her flowers,’ as another agreed, ‘Christina has ALWAYS been supportive of the whole community. She’s done so much for us, it’s about time she receives a recognition like this, Queen of the gays!’
