It was a big night for audience favourites Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Whale’s Brendan Fraser at the latest award ceremony on the road to the Oscars 2023. The Screen Actors Guild Awards took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza, Century City, California overnight, with the stars coming out and, according to some reports, had issues entering the event.
There was a brief hold-up entering the awards ceremony as a fire marshall prevented celebrities including Rooney Mara and Bill Murray from entering the plaza, but representatives for Mara stated the hold-up was due to concerns of overcrowding the event, which honoured Sally Field with a lifetime achievement award.

Having been nominated for five awards, the 2022 film took home four of those awards - including Best Picture, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan. His remarkable return to cinema and win at the SAGs 2023 means he is the first Asian Male winner since the award’s inception.
In his acceptance speech, Quan told attendees “This is a really emotional moment for me. Recently, I was told that if I would win tonight, I would become the very first Asian actor to win in this category. When I heard this, I quickly realised that this moment no longer belongs to just me. It also belongs to everyone who has asked for change. When I stepped away from acting, it’s because there were so few opportunities.”
In the battle for Best Actor between Elvis’ Austin Butler and another fan favourite, Brendan Fraser in The Whale, it was the comeback king of 2022 that scooped the Best Actor role to perhaps strengthen his odds going into the Oscars 2023 ceremony on March 13. Fraser took a moment to address the suffering of irrelevance in Hollywood and a rallying cry not to give up.
“I’ve been at that sea and I rode that wave lately and it’s been powerful and good, and I’ve also had that wave smash me down to the ocean floor and dragged my face along there and wound up on some strange beach in a different world and wondering, where am I now?”

Believe me, if you just stay in there and you put one foot in front of the other, you’ll get to where you need to go. Have courage” he concluded during his speech.
Jennifer Coolidge’s purple patch of television awards continued during the event, as The White Lotus actress picked up yet another gong for her superb work in the HBO series, while Jason Bateman picked up Best Actor for his work in the final season of Netflix thriller Ozark.
But despite the overwhelming success of Everything Everywhere All at Once, the night also belonged to Sally Field, the recipient of this year’s SAG Lifetime Achievement Awards. Addressing her peers when accepting the award, Field let the audience in attendance know that “in all of these almost 60 years, there is not a day that I don’t feel quietly thrilled to call myself an actor. Thank you for this award from you, the people I most wanted respect from, actors."
