And it seems the detective's latest case will take him to places he's not been to before - with images showing him in scenes that definitely are not the streets of London.

One striking image released by Netflix in particular shows John Luther in an arctic setting - the first time we've seen Elba in the role he last played in 2019.

Any plot for the film is likely to follow on from where the dramatic season finale in 2019.

As the lines between good and bad became increasingly blurred for DCI Luther, the show ended with him being sent to prison.

But Luther is expected to return to London at some point as the film follows a 'gruesome serial killer' in the capital city.

The detective will need to break out of prison in his attempt to capture the cyber criminal he previously failed to apprehend.

As well as Elba, the film will also star Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Paul McGann.

The show's creator Neil Cross has written the script, with Jamie Payne serving as director.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: "[Luther's] done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he's ended up in jail. So that's where we start the story. He's contemplating what he's going to do with his life."

All five seasons of the original Luther BBC TV show are currently available on BBC iPlayer.
