No stranger to the Cannes Film Festival, director Jim Jarmusch made his return to the French Riviera once again, but instead of being the focus for a directorial effort, this year was instead on hand as a film composer. Jarmusch and his project Sqürl re-envisioned the music to a 1923 film, ‘Return to Reason,’ as part of the festivals’ ‘Cannes Classic’ collection of films, which also includes a rare big screen outing for Gore Vidal's much maligned yet strangely infatuating 1979 film ‘Caligula,’ presented in all it’s unabashed, full-frontal nudity glory.

Man Ray’s work, also known as ‘Retour à la Raison’, is a silent film, devoid of any traditional storyline or characters. Instead, it focuses on the visual and rhythmic qualities of the images, utilising dynamic and rhythmic editing to create a sense of movement and energy. The film incorporates everyday objects, textures, and shapes, transforming them into a visual symphony of forms and patterns.

The director's intention with ‘Return to Reason’ was to challenge conventional filmmaking and explore the possibilities of pure visual expression. The film is an embodiment of the Dada and Surrealist principles that Man Ray embraced, rejecting logical and linear narratives in favour of experimentation, abstraction, and the subconscious.

‘Return to Reason’ is considered a seminal work in the history of experimental cinema. Its innovative techniques and unconventional approach paved the way for future generations of filmmakers to explore the boundaries of the medium. It remains an important testament to Man Ray's artistic vision and his ability to push the boundaries of various art forms, including photography, sculpture, and now film.

Given Jim Jarmusch being a student of film himself throughout his career, it seems fitting that the maverick director chose the work, which has shown previously at the Museum of Modern Art, as one his musical project Squrl would select to soundtrack.

Sqürl is a musical group formed by American filmmaker and musician Jim Jarmusch and composer Carter Logan. The duo came together in 2009 to create original music for Jarmusch's film ‘The Limits of Control.’ Their collaboration continued beyond the film, and they began releasing standalone albums and soundtracks under the name Sqürl.

The music of Sqürl can be described as experimental, atmospheric, and heavily influenced by various genres such as psychedelic rock, drone, and ambient music. Their compositions often feature repetitive rhythms, hypnotic guitar riffs, and layered textures that create a distinct and immersive sonic experience.

In addition to their studio releases, Sqürl has also composed music for other films directed by Jim Jarmusch, including ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ - which starred Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston - and ‘Paterson.’ Their work in film soundtracks showcases their ability to create evocative and mood-setting music that enhances the cinematic experience.
