Angela Bassett has been a patient lady. She's carefully cultivated an acting career, picking parts where the role is generally a strong, resilient person, rather than a victim. She's turned down roles as her career progressed if she didn't like how the character would convey a black woman to a global audience.

Angela Bassett (64) has said she turned down Halle Berry's Oscar-winning role in Monster's Ball because she found the film to contain too many sexual references.

And now Angela finds herself nominated for an Oscar for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Could this be her chance to win an Oscar?

The historic nomination made her the first woman, the first person of colour and the first Marvel Studios actor to be nominated for an Oscar for their performance in a comic book adaptation.

She's also the second oldest woman to ever be nominated for an acting Oscar. Ruby Dee was the oldest at 84 years old when she was nominated for 2007's American Gangster.

Angela has already picked up wins for her performance at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

"This morning is a little extra special in the Bassett Vance household with news of my Oscar nomination," said Angela in a statement.

This is Angela's second Oscar nomination. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It?

Other firsts include the following...

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell (46) says he is 'beyond honoured' after scooping his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and sent his 'heartfelt congratulations to the lads'. He is nominated for his role in Banshees of Inisherin. Farrell and his three main co-stars, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon, were all nominated for their roles in The Banshees Of Inisherin, while McDonagh scooped a nod for best director.

Michelle Yeoh

Michelle Yeoh (60) made history as she became the first Asian nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards. She said: 'It's overwhelming and you are like thank you for seeing us, seeing people that look like me, so it's about time'. She is nominated for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Brendan Fraser

The actor (54) scored an Oscar nomination, his first, when he was named among the five nominees for Best Actor, recognised for his performance in The Whale. The drama was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for co-star Hong Chau and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for the team that transformed Fraser into his 600-lb. character Charlie.

Ana de Armas

De Armas (34) was nominated for the Oscar a day after Blonde got eight Razzie Award nominations, including worst picture and screenplay, further underscoring how polarising it has been. Her performance as Marilyn Monroe has been lauded by critics, despite the general criticism of the film's portrayal of trauma.
