Kris Jenner officiates Ellen DeGeneres vow renewal - and more celebs who officiated celebrity weddings

The devil works hard but Kris Jenner is one again proving she works harder. The iconic ‘momager’ has added wedding officiant to her long list of roles as she officiated the vow renewal for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.

De Rossi surprised DeGeneres with a vow renewal at their home in front of a celebrity-filled audience including Jennifer Anniston, Meghan Markle, and Prince Harry. The gathering was for De Rossi’s birthday but she shocked her wife when she came out in her wedding dress alongside Brandi Carlile singing with her guitar.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show host a video of the renewal with her followers with the caption: “Portia surprised me at her birthday party by renewing our vows. Thank you @KrisJenner for officiating and @BrandiCarlile for performing, and Portia for being the greatest gift to me, even on your birthday”.

Jenner also took to Instagram to repost a clip from the special day, saying it was an “honour” to do such a special gesture for her friends. The 67-year-old wrote: “It was such an honour to officiate my beautiful BFFs Ellen and Portia wedding vow renewal".

Kris Jenner may be one of a kind, but she isn’t the first celebrity to officiate a friend’s wedding. Here’s a list of some other celebrities who moonlight as ordained ministers.

Adele

Adele has publicly officiated the wedding of not one but two of her close friends. The first came in January 2018 she officiated the nuptials of her close friend Alan Carr and his long-term partner Paul Drayton. The generous friend also hosted the wedding at her house and performed the couple’s first dance song.

Adele shared a photo of herself standing in ceremonial robes in front of a flower wall, telling fans: "Seeing as the cat’s out the bag. I married two of my best friends in January. You know me, any excuse to dress up."

The second came for pals Laura Dockrill and The Maccabees musician Hugo White, where Adele officiated the ceremony but also performed some of her greatest hits at their wedding reception in The Mason’s Arms pub in Battersea.

Iain Sterling

Iain Sterling is known as the voice of Love Island, and has been narrating love stories for a number of years, so it was no surprise when Joel Dommett revealed that his friend Iain Stirling had officiated his nuptials in Mykonos.

Dommett shared a photo of him conducting the ceremony on Instagram with the caption: "A huge thank you to @iaindoesjokes for officiating the ceremony. You made it perfect… and a little like I was on Love Island," he wrote. Iain, meanwhile, joked: "Was a genuine pleasure to be the most attractive person at Joel and Hannah’s wedding."

Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Fans were overwhelmed when it was revealed that Jesse Tyler Ferguson officiated the wedding of his on-screen niece Sarah Hyland. Hyland shared a sweet video including the officiant with the caption: "Jesse, you have been such an amazing friend, mentor, and an integral part of our lives," she wrote in the caption. "So happy birthday to the best officiant of all time! Our wedding truly would not have been as special without you."

Jesse also revealed that he is not the only Modern Family cast member who is ordained. It was later revealed that he actually replaced Ty Burrell, who played Hyland’s Dad Phil on the show, who was originally supposed to officiate the ceremony.

Sir Ian McKellen

Sir Patrick Stewart asked his long-time friend and frequent collaborator Sir Ian McKellen to lead his wedding ceremony to Sunny Ozell back in 2013. The actor became ordained through the Universal Life Church in honour of the occasion.
